The Gold Coast Titans have been stuck down the lower end of the NRL ladder for some time now. Many coaches and players have been and gone as the club tries to find the winning formula to achieving success in the NRL. Whilst they have always shown glimpses of potential, the club has ultimately struggled to find consistency and a large reason behind that could be the instability of the spine. Even this year, there was plenty of speculation around what the best make-up of the 1, 6, and 7 jerseys would be for the Titans.
But one statistic that has now been identified is that the Titans have a very poor track record of identifying and holding onto decent halfbacks. With the unfortunate injury suffered by Luke Metcalf at the Warriors, it leaves the door open for former Titan Tannah Boyd to come in and wear the number 7 jersey for the top four Warriors. In fact, for each team currently in the top four their halfback is a former Titan.
Jamal Forgarty at the Raiders moved to the nations capitol after 4 years on the Gold Coast in 2021. Jahrome Hughes at the Storm famously only had one game for the Titans, the club where he started his career before finding another opportunity in North Queensland. Whilst, Toby Sexton had two years with the Titans before moving to the Bulldogs where he has gone from strength to strength despite the club moving in a different direction for 2026.
It’s a crazy statistic that highlights thew amount of turnover the club has had in key positions over the last decade or so. There would be various reasons why the club hasn’t been able to retain each of these players, some may have pushed for a move, others might have felt unwanted on the Gold Coast. But if the Titans are going to turn their club around in the long term then they need to be able to identify and retain talented playmakers.
With that being said the current group of spine players the Titans have are full of potential, Jayden Campbell in particular has all the makings of an elite playmaker in the NRL and the Titans will need to ensure he feels supported and rewarded for his commitment to the club. Kieran Foran is the leader of their spine at the moment, but he doesn’t have much more footy left in him so the Titans need to be switched on in ensuring that they can set a foundation for their team to build around in the seasons ahead.
