The 2025 NRLW season kicked off in style over the past 2 weekends, delivering a mix of upsets, dominant performances, and impressive debuts that showcased just how far the competition has come.
In one of the most talked-about results, Parramatta Eels shocked last year’s runners-up Cronulla Sharks with a gritty 18-16 win at PointsBet Stadium. The Eels were steered around the park by halfback Rachael Pearson, while fullback Abbi Church was electric at the back. It was a statement win for a side looking to push into the top four following their 2024 campaign.
The Brisbane Broncos, bolstered by the return of Tamika Upton, reminded everyone of their premiership pedigree with a commanding 28-4 win over the Wests Tigers. Upton looked sharp and dangerous, slicing through the line on multiple occasions in a performance that reaffirmed her place among the game’s elite.
A huge crowd turned out for Canterbury-Bankstown’s long-awaited NRLW debut, and the Bulldogs didn’t disappoint. Led by the calm leadership of Tayla Preston and the energy of a fired-up forward pack, the newcomers upset the Newcastle Knights 26-12. It was a polished performance that will only boost belief in their first year in the competition.
Over in Wollongong, the St George Illawarra Dragons ran away 36-14 winners over the Canberra Raiders. Indie Bostock had a debut to remember, crossing for two tries in a sensational performance. The Dragons were unfazed throughout the match powering through with some crisp ball movement and strong defence.
In Townsville, the North Queensland Cowboys kicked off their season with a clinical 20-6 win over the Titans. Captain Kirra Dibb was in complete control, and Emma Manzelmann added spark around the ruck. The Cowboys look like a side ready to challenge for a top-four finish this season.
Rounding out the weekend, reigning premiers the Sydney Roosters picked up where they left off in 2024 with a dominant 30-6 victory over the returning New Zealand Warriors. Winger Taina Naividi lit up the match with a hat-trick, proving just how dangerous the Roosters can be when they find their rhythm early.
With strong crowd numbers, broadcast buzz, and no shortage of individual highlights, Round 1 and 2 have been a reminder of the growing quality and excitement in the NRLW. If this start to the season is anything to go by, 2025 could be the competition’s best yet.
