The State of Origin mens series is up and running, whilst NSW will be pleased with their performance, Queensland have a lot of reflecting to do in order to get ready to be more competitive in game 2. Some players failed to deliver, others have been struck down by injury, and some of those that missed out on selection in game 1 have demonstrated just why they deserve their chance in game 2. Here’s all the players on the verge of being selected for the next game in the series despite missing out in game 1.
NSW
It would be a surprise to see a huge amount of changes to the NSW team given the strength of their performance in the opening game. With that being said, Laurie Daley does still have a few options at his disposal and key decision to make. The one choice he may be forced into is selecting a replacement middle forward for Mitch Barnett who appears to have sustained a knee injury. Stefano Utoikamanu was named in the extended squad and could do a job if called upon, Keaon Koloamatangi has also been in excellent form in recent weeks and offers some versatility. Terrell May deserves to be in the conversation, but all reports suggest he is not in consideration. One option Laurie Daley could turn to is the 2024 NSW captain Jake Trbojevic who would be available again after passing all of his concussion protocols.
Queensland
Queensland and Billy Slater have a lot more decisions to make, they could either blow apart their forward pack which was underwhelming, or make changes to their spine which failed to perform, they could even do both. Depending on how much loyalty and belief Billy Slater holds towards Daly Cherry-Evans, Tom Dearden looms as a likely inclusion at halfback. The move would allow for Kurt Mann to get his crack at the utility jersey for the Maroons and offer some impact off the bench.
For Queensland’s forwards it’s possible we could see mass changes. Corey Horsbrough appeals as a firebrand option that would give the Queensland forward pack some aggression, whilst Jai Arrow will surely be included after being overlooked for game 1. Kurt Capewell, Jaydn Su’A and Felise Kaufusi are more experienced options who could also return to the Origin arena.
Both coaches have some important decisions to make ahead of naming their game 2 State of Origin squads, it could be time for Queensland to roll the dice, whilst NSW is blessed with depth and a relatively stable squad. Still, anything can happen in State of Origin and that’s why we love it so much.
